If you are a Good Physiotherapist, nothing can stop you to your way to successful one. But, if you are not a “good one” you career may be at serious threat.
Look around your town & you may know how many of them is Good Physiotherapist. There is dearth of it and if you prove yourself good, your career is on the way to what you have dreamt of.
But how to become a Good one?
I often come across the question “how to become a good physiotherapist? My answer to them is; first, try to be a good human being then only you can become good Physiotherapist. It does not only applies to our profession, it is universal which applies everywhere. If you are not sincere to yourself and profession how can one be a good scientist or great painter or great leader?
Apart from being sincere to your profession, there is certain quality and skill which makes you stand out of the rest. Though there is no set of the particular rule; the points I am going to mention will help you to see physiotherapy from the different perspective. It will help who are new in the field or just going to start.By the end of this article, you will learn that these points are so simple but these are often overlooked. If you are not a good physiotherapist how can you be a successful physiotherapist?
Why to be a good physiotherapist?
If you are a Physiotherapist, nothing will boost your confidence other than being a good physiotherapist.But, if you are not a good one you career may be a serious threat. The IAP (Indian Association of Physiotherapist) released the list of IAP approved colleges 2016. There are the total number of 216 colleges for Under-Graduate Physiotherapy courses. Out of which 21 is Government and rest 195 are private college.
Let us consider on an average 80 physiotherapist passing out each year (though the actual number may be quite higher) from the single college. This makes 17,280 number of physiotherapist passing out each year.
They increase competition by adding to the existing number of practising Physiotherapist. Every year the number of colleges increase, further swelling the number. Here, we have not considered the Post-Graduates and non IAP approved colleges.And a new good Physiotherapist establishing in your city may slowly expand his practice. With time you may be wipe out of the practice.
So, becoming a good Physiotherapist is a strong foundation to a future successful therapist.
Your patient is your examiner.
Do not take any of your cases lightly, however, the case may seem to be simple. Not all cases are similar. Like we all have two ears, one nose, one mouth but still we all look different from each other. Likewise, one frozen shoulder case can be different to another frozen shoulder case. If you consider patient as an examiner who is examining your skill, you will strive hard to pass the exam by giving best service. In this way, you will always try to be sincere to the patient.
Listen! Listen!! Listen!!!
Listening need lot of patience. Peter O’Sullivan, a world class Physiotherapist is known to spend the significant amount of time on listening and gets a thorough understanding of the person before he dives into his objective exam. Listen to your patient carefully. Take note of every detail he/she describes to you. Sometimes silly information also has a clue. Some patients are shy & hesitate to speak. Ask the relevant question and try to extract information. Take note of the history of treatment and diagnostic reports.
Maintain professionalism.
Keep your setup clean and tidy. Speak low and sweet, your way of talking influences them a lot. Be empathetic to poor patient. They may not pay you full but their blessing works.
Final words.
Being good will give you immense satisfaction and believe me money will come chasing you. It will not only benefit an individual who is practising but also to the profession as a whole which is suffering from the severe crisis.
