We will discuss easy exercises for eye muscles to help improve vision and relieve eye strain. Although there is not enough research to prove the efficacy of these exercises in improving vision, they can relax fatigued eyes. These exercises are simple and can be easily performed at home. Let’s get started.

Easy eye muscle strengthening exercise for sore eyes
There are several exercises you can try that are both easy and effective. These exercises can help improve focus, reduce eye strain, and even prevent vision problems down the line. In this article, we’ll go over some simple eye muscle-strengthening exercises that you can start incorporating into your daily routine.
#1 Eye focus exercise with shifting object sideways
The first exercise in the list of exercises for eye muscles is the focus exercise. This exercise can be performed by using your finger, a pen, or any similar object. To begin this exercise:
- Hold the object about a foot away from your eyes, and keep it right before you.
- Then, focus all your attention on the tip of the object.
- Once you have focused on the tip, slowly shift the object to the right side. While doing so, ensure your eyes do not break eye contact with the object. It is important to note that you don’t have to turn your head; turn your eyes to that side.
- Take the object to the end and slowly return it to the normal position.
- From this position, again move it to the left side, and while moving the object, your focus should remain on the tip. Then, bring the object back to the front position.
- Repeat this on each side alternately 10 to 15 times in a session.
This exercise will help strengthen your eye muscles, improve your focus, and reduce eye strain caused by prolonged use of digital devices. It is recommended to perform this exercise at least once a day for best results.
#2 Exercise for eye muscles with shifting object vertically
This exercise is designed to help strengthen the muscles of your eyes and improve your focus. To begin, you will need a pen or pencil.
- Hold the pen at arm’s length in front of your face, and focus your eyes on the tip of the pen.
- Next, you will move the pen up and down instead of left-right.
- While focusing on the pen’s tip, slowly move the pen upwards and then downwards. Make sure you move the pen smoothly, without sudden or jerky movements. It is important to note that you should only move your eyes, not your head while doing this exercise. Keep your head still and let your eyes do the work. Your eyes should remain fixed on the pen’s tip throughout the exercise.
- Repeat this exercise for at least 10 to 15 times in one session. You can do this exercise multiple times daily to strengthen your eye muscles and improve your focus.
#3 Eye focusing exercise with head moving sideways
Our next exercise is just opposite to the previous one. Here you have to keep the target object stationary and move the head.
- To start with, find a pen or use your finger and hold it straight out in front of your eyes at arm’s length. Make sure the pen is at eye level and not too high or too low.
- Next, focus your eyes on the tip of the pen. Hold this focus for a few seconds until you feel comfortable. Then, slowly move your head to the left while keeping your eyes focused on the pen. As you move your head, you should notice that the pen stays constantly in front of you.
- Continue this process, moving your head from side to side while keeping your focus on the tip of the pen.
- Aim to repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times in a session. Take breaks as needed, but maintain a consistent pace throughout the exercise.
#4 Moving vertically with focusing a constant object
To perform this exercise, you will need a pen or any other object with a tip.
- Start by holding the pen at arm’s length, keeping it stationary in front of you. Focus your gaze on the tip of the pen.
- Next, slowly raise your head while keeping your eyes locked on the tip of the pen.
- Once you have raised your head as far as you can, hold it there for a few seconds while focusing on the pen’s tip.
- Now, slowly lower your head back down while keeping your eyes on the pen’s tip.
- Once you have lowered your head as far as you can, hold it there for a few seconds while focusing on the pen’s tip.
- Repeat this up-and-down motion 10 to 15 times in a session.
#5 Eye focus exercise with distance shiting
Let me rephrase the text for you to make it clearer and error-free: This is the fifth exercise for strengthening your eye muscles. As with the previous exercises, you will need a pen to perform this exercise. Unlike the previous exercises where the distance of focus was fixed, in this exercise, you will have to vary the distance of focus slightly by increasing and decreasing it.
This exercise is called the “Near-Far Focus Exercise”, and it can help improve your eye focus and reduce eye strain.
- To start, take an object with small details, like the tip of a pen or a pencil, and hold it straight in front of your eyes at a distance of about one foot. Focus your eyes on the details of the object.
- Next, slowly move the object a little bit farther away from your eyes while maintaining the focus on the details. Keep the object at the same eye level.
- After a few seconds, bring the object closer to your eyes, focusing on the details again.
- Repeat this process of moving the object closer and farther away 10 to 15 times in a single session.
- You may feel a strange but comfortable sensation over your forehead as you bring the object closer. This is normal and indicates that your eye muscles are working. Over time, this exercise can help improve your eye focus and reduce strain on your eyes.
#6 Making geometrical shape with focus
The next exercise for your eye muscles is an interesting one. You have to make geometrical figures using your eyes, such as a circle, a square, a rectangle, or a figure of eight.
- To perform the geometrical figures exercise, find a comfortable place to sit where you can easily focus your eyes on a wall in front of you.
- When you feel ready, focus on a specific point on the wall, such as a spot or a small object.
- Next, move your eyes in a circular motion around the point, as if you are tracing the outline of a circle with your gaze. Move your eyes slowly and smoothly, ensuring you complete a full circle.
- Repeat the exercise in the opposite direction once you have completed a full circle in one direction.
You can also try making other geometrical figures with your eyes, such as squares, rectangles, or figures of eight. To make a square, for example, focus your eyes on a point on the wall and then move them in a straight line to the left, then up, then to the right, and finally down, completing the square.
It’s important to remember to move your eyes slowly and deliberately and to avoid any sudden or jerky movements. If you feel dizzy or lose your balance while exercising, stop immediately and take a break. This exercise is especially beneficial for elderly people or anyone who spends a lot of time looking at screens, as it can help to reduce eye strain and improve eye health.

#7 Focus shifting exercise for eye muscles
To exercise your eye muscles, we will be using a pen. You need to focus on three different objects at three different distances.
- Hold a pen about a foot away from your eyes. The second object should be around 10 feet away from the pen, and the third object should be placed about 20 feet away from you.
- Focus on the object closest to you for 15 seconds, then shift your focus to the object placed 10 feet away from you and focus on it for 15 seconds. Next, smoothly shift your focus to the object placed farthest from you and focus on it for 15 seconds.
- Collect your focus and start again by focusing on the tip of the pen.
- Repeat the process by focusing on the object placed 10 feet away from you and then on the one placed 20 feet away from you. You can practice this exercise with any item, pot, bottle, or anything you have.
- Do it at least 10 to 15 times in a session; the more you practice, the better.
Regularly practising these exercises will help improve your eye health and reduce eye strain, which could cause headaches.
Final words
Perform all these 7 exercise for eye muscles twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Continue with exercises for at least a week. In addition to eye exercises, you must also take care of food and nutrition for healthy eyes.
